Greyhound Handicapping - What Can You Learn From a Loudmouth?

If there's one thing I can't stand at the dog track it's someone who has to yell to talk. You know the type. You bet the 4 dog and they stand behind you, yelling, "Come on you 3 dog; you can pass that 4" and it does and you lose and they win.

To me, the most galling thing about people like this is that they're so often obviously not the sharpest knife in the drawer. You can tell by the way they talk that they're not very intelligent, yet they keep picking dogs. How do they do it?

Well, I used to think that they were just lucky, but I've gotten to know a few of them over the years and I've found out that it's usually not luck. Most of the time, they're like mentally challenged people who can play the piano like Van Cliburn or paint like Da Vinci. They have a gift.

I knew someone named Walter who was like this. He was fifty-ish, but still lived with his mother and never was able to pass his driver's test or finish high school. He worked in a donut shop part time and spent most of his time at the track.

He'd come in, grab a program, go over it for about five minutes and then pick winners for the rest of the program. Sometimes, he wouldn't even bet them, because he'd get distracted or just forget. He probably could have been a very rich man, if he could have gotten his act together a little bit better.

I didn't take advantage of him, but a lot of other people did. They made fun of him behind his back, but followed him to the window and bet what he bet. Then they yelled at him to pipe down when he was shouting for his dog to come in.

Me, I can't pick dogs the way Walter did. It's ironic because I'm not a stupid person. I can pick dogs just fine if I handicap and use a good method. I guess when we're lacking in one thing, Mother Nature gives us something else to compensate.

So, next time you get annoyed by a loudmouth at the track, keep in mind that he or she might be loud, but they might also be good at picking dogs. You never know.
