You may know how to bet on the dogs and be a reasonably good handicapper, but even good dog players need a rest once in awhile. We get jaded and stale and need to take a break from the dog track. But, of course, you can't keep a dog player from playing the dogs, so we always come back.

Most of the time, we find that we're sharper when we come back from a change of venue. However, sometimes, we just can't seem to get back into our old handicapping groove. Has this happened to you? Even with the same handicapping methods and the same approach and routine, you're just not hitting them like you used to.

What can you do? Well, think of what dogs do when they come back from a layoff. They don't just go right back into the grade they were running in. No, first of all, they have some schooling races. The racing secretary wants to make sure that they're still healthy and in good form before he sends them out against other dogs.

You can do the same thing, only by betting fewer races or betting on paper, or by only playing the races that you handicap the best. Play only $2 win bets for a few programs until you get back into the swing of things. Play some of the dogs on your "Best Bets List." You do have one, right?

Take it easy. Don't expect to just jump right back into playing races hot and heavy. This might be a good time to try a new handicapping method too. Sometimes, right after a break from the action is the best time to learn something new and improved.
