Most people who go to the dog track start out with anticipation. Before the first race, the crowd is upbeat, optimistic and hoping that they'll make money. The first race goes off and for many bettors, by the time the double is called, things go downhill fast.
They miss bets they should have made. They make bets they shouldn't have made. They zig when they should zag and start to realize that their bankroll is getting very thin. This is when a lot of people get desperate. They're running out of races and money and it scares them.
They get that sinking feeling in the pit of their stomach that makes them feel like they've screwed up again and will never make money at the track. This might be true, but desperation makes us see everything through a dark curtain that makes things look worse than they really are.

It's at this point that many bettors make their worst mistake of the program. They start to bet more money on more dogs. It's at this point that they can still pull back and salvage what they can from a program that's not working for them. But as soon as they start betting wildly, they're lost.
The solution for avoiding this situation is simple. Get a good handicapping system and learn the basics first, before you start venturing into exotic betting territory. Bet on paper first until you really feel like you know what you're doing. If you can't pick winners on old programs, what makes you think you'll be able to pick them at the track?
Bet small, simple bets until you're very good at it. When you're ready for exotic bets, start with small $1 tri key bets, not complicated wheels and part wheels. The old saying is true, "You have to walk before you can run." Avoid that desperate feeling by preparing for success, not by asking for failure by betting out of desperation instead of knowledge.
